There is no way around containers, and even SAP will soon have to reorient itself here and allow the NetWeaver stack to be run in containers. There are many indications that Kubernetes will win the battle for supremacy among container management tools. SAP has also already invested in Gardener and is also intensifying its partnerships with IBM and Red Hat Openshift.
There are the following types of Support Packages: SPAM/SAINT Update A SPAM/SAINT update (PAT) contains updates and improvements to the SAP Patch Manager and the SAP Add-On Installation Tool. FCS Support Package An FCS Support Package (FFD) brings an FCS system to the generally available release level (GA level) before other support packages can be inserted. Component Support Package One such support package (COP) applies to one software component (SAP_BASIS, SAP_HR, SAP_APPL, etc) and contains corrections for errors in the repository and in the dictionary in exactly this software component. Support Packages for the component SAP_HR include adjustments due to legal changes in addition to these corrections. A BW Support Package (BWP) is a support package for the SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP_BW) software component and contains corrections only. Add-On Support Package An Add-On Support Package (AOP) always applies to an add-on with a specific release and includes corrections for that add-on.

SAP Basis Administration Batch Control Job Control A large proportion of batch jobs run at night, while IT systems are available for dialog and online applications during the day. Meanwhile, web applications demand computer capacity around the clock. Even dialog systems are no longer in operation only from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. or longer. The time window for administration tasks is increasingly shifting toward transaction processing. This leaves less and less time for mission-critical batches, which can lead to disruptions and terminations. Whereas batch processing used to be a mainframe domain, companies today usually have to control background processing in heterogeneous operating system environments and client-server applications. For this reason, cross-platform, integration-capable job schedulers that can respond to unplanned events are in demand.

Better technologies have expanded the role of SAP Basis Administrators, paralleling the IT industry as a whole.
